Arrests, impoundments and fines abound in weekly safety operations

The City of Cape Town's Traffic Service and Metro Police Department arrested 132 people during operations in the past week - many for drunk driving - and issued more than 6 200 fines. Read more below:
'The City’s Traffic Service continues to have a number of operations daily and our biggest concerns remain drunk drivers and the number of taxis impounded. Complaints about taxis and other road violations continue to dominate and during the past week officers arrested 60 suspects, impounded 60 vehicles and issued 4 574 fines,' said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
In operations in the Strand area officers arrested 10 people, eight in Muizenberg, 17 in Nyanga/Manenberg areas and 14 in Philippi for driving under the influence of alcohol.
In a sedan taxi operation held at the Green point area officers impounded six vehicles and issued 37 fines for various other offences, while in a drag racing operation held in the Milnerton/Plattekloof areas officers arrested 10 suspects, eight for driving under the influence of alcohol, one for reckless/negligent driving and one for possessing a fraudulent vehicle licence.
Metro Police reported similar concerns.
This past weekend officers netted 32 suspects for driving while under the influence of alcohol and a further 33 for various offences including the illegal possession of drugs, dangerous weapons, malicious damage to property, possession of an imitation firearm, resisting arrest and the possession of stolen goods.
The drunk drivers were arrested during operations in Lansdowne, Khayelitsha, Parow and Goodwood.
'Officers were busy with crime prevention patrols in Macassar, Strand and Eerste River where they arrested nine suspects for the possession of drugs and dangerous weapons. The items confiscated include two knives, 17 half mandrax tablets, and nine whole mandrax tablets,' said Alderman Smith.
On Saturday 14 March 2020, Metro Police officers attached to the Camera Response Unit (CRU) received a complaint about a man with a firearm at the corner of Long and Pepper Streets in Cape Town.
The quick response of the officers led to the arrest of a 20-year-old man with an imitation firearm under the driver's seat of his vehicle.
He was arrested for the possession of the firearm and driving while under the influence of alcohol. The suspect was detained at Cape Town Central SAPS.
